MS episode 115:: #Quiltcon2017 recap with Suzy Quilts

Quiltcon2017 recap with Suzy Quilts

Suzy from Suzy Quilts and I met up in Savannah, Ga to attend #Quiltcon2017. Suzy has attended Quiltcon before but this was my first time. We chat about what we loved and what we wished had been different. We also tell the crazy story of what happened with our airbnb because we hope that it will help others if they are ever in the same situation. We also talk about having a business in the sewing industry. Suzy has been an amazing friend to me since we met and we often talk about business. Okay we talk about business all of the time and I wanted to share some of our chat with you as well. It is an episode packed with so much great information.

episode054art

Thanks so much for tuning in this week. It was such a treat to get to chat with Amy, David, and Virginia. I mentioned in the intro that Amy & David had a limited amount of time to chat and I was, well, super chatty so we ran out of time. I will have a part 2 episode with them coming up later this season. Keep an eye out for details on how you can record a question that may be chosen to be on the podcast.

ModSew:: Flying Geese of Comfort

Have you heard about the Zeller family? If you are on instagram you probably saw, participated, or shared about the @thezellerauction that Katy Kristin hosted to benefit them. The Zeller’s have lost three children, their home and belongings, and now their health is suffering because of exposure to mold. They have three children as well that are also suffering from mold exposure.

IMG_1779

I have two daughters and I know if they lost everything they would be devasted. Kids are kids and they don’t have a lot that is all theirs but their stuff is all theirs. The Zeller’s found out they had to leave their house and the stuff in it because it had mold. really bad mold. They could not take or save anything. My heart sank and my brain started to think of a way to help.

IMG_1781

I put out a call for quilts on instagram. I had three awesome people step up and say they would make a quilt for them. I knew I would make a girl quilt with Amy Butler Lark and some HST. The other ladies made another girl quilt, a boy quilt and a queen size for Misty and her husband. It was amazing and so why I love this community so so much. Everyone didn’t think twice about helping. And those ladies are @darcychildress, @marygeorge, and @sewinlovequilting please go follow these ladies and let them know how awesome they are.

Misty (Zeller) said she really loved patchwork. I knew that everyone needed a little Amy Butler in their life so It was a perfect match. I also knew I didn’t want to quilt it a lot because my kids seem to like the snuggly quilts a little more than the ones that have a lot of quilting. So I did some minimal quilting on this and washed and dried it before sending it off. I mean quilts are always so much better after they come out of the dryer!

IMG_1783

I did something I haven’t tried before and that was quilting the quilt, then trimming away the batting, trimming the backing so I could use it like a binding. That is not easy to explain! lol I think it really worked on this quilt. I didn’t think it was easier or anything but I have been wanting to try it.

I used the HST in a flying geese pattern. If you look at the quilt and focus you can see the geese are going down the center, then each going a different way up and down the quilt. It was a crazy pattern but the Zeller’s are a flock of geese having a really hard and crazy time right now. No matter how hard and crazy though they are still a flock and they stick together.

I thought about that craziness and pain and sickness so much while making this quilt. I thought so much about how I wish I could pray something into this quilt to help them with what they are going through. I did pray a lot of prayers for them into this quilt. I ask that you lift up the Zeller family as well. They need all of the love, hugs, and prayers they can get right now.

Mod Sew:: the feathered bag

IMG_1045

Can I just say I took these really quick to get a picture before sending them in the mail to their new owners. Okay got that. No picture judging? Okay cool.

I chatted with Susan Petersen of Freshly Picked Moccasins on the Modern Sewciety podcast. I wanted to send her a little something and it turned into something bigger. That is okay. She has been such a sweetheart to me and I wanted to thank her. SHE ACTUALLY SENT ME A THANK YOU for being on the podcast. YEA she is cool like that.

 IMG_1050

Freshly Picked if a company that sells leather baby moccasins. I know she needed leather on whatever I made for her. I ended up adding it to the handles. I thought she also needed a decorative featherish/chicken foot stitch 🙂

IMG_1051

I added a cute little circle pocket inside. I loooooooove that pink cheetah print. It is actually from walmart but I love it so much I buy it all of the time.

IMG_1048

I paper pieced a feather from Alison Glass’s feather pattern. I have to say I modified it and it was so tricky. You can see that is kinda a wonky arrow. Oh well. I love those circles in the BLUNT arrow… looks like an owl to me.

IMG_1046

The bottom of the BLUNT feather. I quilted the outside of the bag with straight lines. I really didn’t want this bag to leave my house!!!!

And I am not a perfectionist when it comes to creating something. It is a creation so that blunt arrow is just something I had to laugh about. I didn’t know how to fix it and once I noticed it was really too late to fix it.
