MS episode 148:: Minky Kim

148art minky kim

I am chatting with Minki Kim today on the podcast. I need to warn you to get ready for some inspiration. Minki Kim is someone I have followed online for a really long time so when the opportunity came to have a chat with her I was so excited. She was a little nervous about chatting because English is her second language. I thought she did an amazing job of sharing more about her journey into sewing. how she gets inspired in her creative process, and so much more. I ask all of the questions on photography, illustrating with thread, business, oh and her amazing fabric collections. I can’t wait for you to listen to this episode because it is just full of so much great information and inspiration.

Utility Style, Quilts for Everyday Living Blog Hop and Giveaway

Utility-Style Quilts for Everyday Living Front Cover

I am so excited to be on the blog hop for Sharon Holland’s new book, Utility-Style, Quilts for Everyday Living. Sharon designs amazing fabrics for Art Gallery Fabrics so I wasn’t surprised at how amazing her book was when it showed up on my doorstep. I am so excited to share what I made with you with a big huge GO GET THIS BOOK NOW in everything I say. Sharon and the Landauer Publishing Team have done an outstanding job. She even has the cutest free pattern just for you to celebrate the book!

So let me tell you the story of this amazing quilt. I have seriously fallen in love with this quilt, the colors, and what is means to the person I am gifting it to. One of my husband’s partners is a young attorney married to another beautiful young attorney and they both have the monogram JJJ and they are expecting a baby boy which will also have the monogram of JJJ. When my kids were little I remember my oldest saying, “that family really love the letter J!” Yes they do and we love them so very much.

I asked the expecting mother for a dress shirt of her husband. I wanted to incorporate it into the design. She mentioned the nursery was navy and white so I started there pulling fabrics. I stuck to that color pallet but I kept thinking it needed more of something. So Lucy, my local sewing buddy, suggested a golden yellow and it was just the right addition. I love navy and yellow so much and think it adds the perfect amount of contrast for the navy and white.

There are so many things in the book that I wanted to make. I also wanted to read all of the stories of the quilts and look at the awesome pictures. This book was so beautiful and full of great projects. What I really loved about the book was the variety of sizes and the variety of fabrics used in the projects. This is a perfect book to raid your fabric stash or use a bundle.

Hi lovely readers. I am so happy to say I am sharing what I made with Christa Watson from Christa Quilts new fabric line, Modern Marks, from Benartex Fabrics with you! Christa is a long time fan of my podcast and from the beginning has been one of the most encouraging friends. She even puts up with my random texts and emails full of questions about EQ, podcasting, fabrics, quilting, and everything in between. She is just the best and I am so excited to sew with her debut fabric line. I remember when it was just on her dream list.

MS episode 139:: Aaron Hoffman of Me + You Fabrics and Hoffman Fabrics

ep139art - hoffman

There aren’t many times I have guests on the podcast that I meet in person before I have the chance to invite them on the podcast. Aaron Hoffman is one of the few and I am so happy it happened that way. Aaron is a quiet guy that sees this industry from a completely unique perspective who happens to always have a place to charge a cell phone at events. You have to know the secrets and Suzy from Suzy Quilts was in the know. We have chatted with Aaron at several events and it was so much fun to hear Aaron talk about the story of Hoffman Fabrics and Me + You, the modern batiks division Aaron created. The story is so unique and without a doubt legendary. I mean Magnum PI’s famous shirt was made with a Hoffman Fabrics print called jungle Bird. That is epic. So I convinced Aaron to come on the podcast for a chat so you, too, can hear this story. He tells of the story of his grandfather who founded the company, where they are taking the company as the industry changes, and even their state of the art water facility. We also had a surprise guest, Michelle Flores, Markering Director and the official Hoffman Fabrics guide. She gives tours of the Hoffman warehouse in California and knew so much about the story of the company. It is an honor to be able to share the stories in this amazing community.
