ModSew:: Lecien quilt for Yoko

I am a Flower Sugar World Ambassador for Lecien Fabrics. If you don’t know about Lecien Fabrics you should go check out my chat with Yoko Tamori on episode 077. Yoko is the US rep for Lecien and she gave me all kinds of information about the company, fabric collections, and notions. They really have the cutest fabric.

One of the World Ambassadors is Minki Kim who asked if she could send this above block to be included in the quilt as well. I was so blown away by her artistry. So many tiny stitches, small details, and just pure awesomeness. I loved everything about this block and that the saying is so perfect for Yoko.

If you don’t follow Minki Kim on instagram you so need to go over and do so. She is @zeriano. She also has an amazing blog called, Minki’s Work Table, which details her projects in depth and also bits and pieces of her life. She is amazingly talented. She also has a book out called, Sew Illustrated, which features many projects like the one above. I have to say the above block inspired me to think about learning to sew illustrations because the possibilities are just endless.

I asked all of the World Ambassadors to send me churn dash blocks made with Flower Sugar fabrics. I really loved seeing what fabrics everyone choose to use on their blocks. I would like to add that the blocks I received had the neatest backs, so clean and accurate. A group of amazingly talented sewists for sure.

I ended up centering Minki’s block because I really thought it needed its own frame. It did. It really did. I then used the blocks I received and a couple I made myself to come up with the layout. I wanted it to be a small throw that Yoko could use and enjoy. She has just moved into a beautiful new home and everyone needs a new quilt for a housewarming gift. Amiright?

I always struggle a little with quilting quilts. I don’t like too much quilting on a quilt I know will be used often because I want it to be snuggly. I went with a random wavey line pattern. I decided on this because Yoko is often posting pictures of her kids playing by the water so this would be a gentle nod to that. She lives in Washington State and the pictures of the shore there are so beautiful but completely different from our shores in Florida. I need to get up her way soon because it looks so magical.

The back is scrappy bits of Flower Sugar and a Lecien houndstooth I had on hand. I made the anchor playing around with EQ7 when I first got the program. I love the block so so much but there was some improvements to be made for sure. I knew it would be the perfect thing for the scrappy back and, again, a nod to the water. The binding is a striped pink and white I had on hand (I don’t know the manufacture on it. so sorry).

I think it turned out so well and I am so lucky to be an ambassador with such talented ladies. They are beyond amazing.
