ModSew:: MugRug hop with Ellison Lane

MERRY

Welcome Ellison Lane friends. I am so glad you stopped by. I have to admit that this project really made me get into the Christmas spirit and season. I hope you enjoy my project.

Christmas is a time that I cherish but also a time that makes me remember being a kid. When you are a child you love the whole season of Christmas for so many reasons but for me it reminds me of my grandma. She lived across the street from us, we all lived on a farm in the country, and I went to her house every day. She was a constant in my life until she suddenly passed when my oldest daughter was born. It was a hard thing to have a newborn and loose someone so special.

I remember so many things about her house at Christmas because I usually helped her set everything up since we lived so close. I had a lot of cousins that always would come in and out of grandmas house stopping by to eat her awesome food, sit on the porch and chat with her and grandpa, help her shell peas in the summer, and well hang out with her because she let you do things your parents didn’t like climb trees and eat fried bologna sandwiches. It was a great childhood.

So when Jennifer asked me to participate in the mug rug hop I thought I would do something modern. I wanted to live up to the name of this blog. BUT I couldn’t help making something with a vintage feel that made me think of grandma. I found these circles of Christmas fabric and thought it would be perfect. So vintage and so perfect for your mug of hot chocolate.

So I quilted the top with some batting and then sewing the back on RST, turned them right sides out, and sewed around the outside. Super easy. I love how they are simple but so Christmas-y. They make me want to build a fire, make some hot chocolate, and read to the girls. Actually after making them I really decorated the house more, put up some lights outside, and got more into the Christmas spirit. And shed some sweet tears remembering my grandma.

thoughts on the online community, giveaways, and winners

Sometimes I think I need pictures to post on here. I need to have super edited and beautiful pictures. Alas not today just my thoughts. I can’t tell you how awesome this online, especially the sewing, community can be. I have the nicest people that comment and email me about the blog and podcast, people who leave love on instagram, and when I ask for help for the Zeller family so many ask how they can help out. How cool is that?!?! And then I have those that respond to my emails asking them to come on the podcast to chat. I can’t thank them enough. And there is Jennifer that with all she has going on with her own family, blog (Ellison Lane), and Sew South made time to chat about Downton Abbey. I makes me wonder if I am being kind enough to others. If I am doing enough for others. If I am using my talents to help others. I hope so. I really do. I think you guys are so great.

I put up a call for those to help make quilts for the Zeller family on instagram. If you don’t know their story, please read this post. I think we have enough who are going to help but then others wanted to help but not make quilts. I get that. Time is precious and sometimes we just don’t have the extra time. So if you would like to help then shoot me an email. I think showering them with love no matter what we send is awesome. I think pillowcases, doll quilts, pouches, handmade toys, etc would all be awesome to send them. Heck even some embellished hand towels. Every time they would look at these things in their home they will see hope. They will see kindness. They will see color to help brighten their world.

And then there are the people you meet online that you connect with and feel like you are instant friends. I have had that happen a lot lately. Take Julia from My Rainboots are Red. And Nathalie from Nathalie Bearden. And Ellyn from Ellyn’s place who leaves comments on the blog which make my day. I have seriously felt so much love and kindness from each and every one of you. I can’t stop having people on the podcast because there is always someone I want to chat with and get to know a little more. I love getting to know you. I love allowing you to hear your favorite bloggers laugh, voice, and passion. It is so cool. So stay tuned and hold on because there are some awesome people coming on the podcast. I don’t know how I am going to keep up but I will find a way. Somehow. Someway.
